Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman attends the inaugural Faith Not Fear Summit

Our Vision

Safe neighborhoods and positive, collaborative relationships between our communities and our police.

Our Major Victories

  • Connecting police and communities
To support clergy in their efforts to improve police-community relations, we're working with the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego and the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego to launch Building Trust: A Partnership of Clergy, Communities and Police Initiative. The goal of the project is to provide knowledge, resources and support to clergy of all faiths so they can more effectively build trust between police and communities. We will provide practical information to clergy on their role in strengthening police-community relations, including the most successful approaches clergy have used in San Diego and around the country, community-specific information and guidance on concrete steps to get started.
  • Dismantling racial profiling
We're holding the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) accountable to keep racial profiling out of our neighborhoods. We've advocated for SDPD to publicly release its study examining police traffic stops for evidence of racial profiling, and to follow through on recommendations from the Police Executive Research Forum report.  In 2017, our leaders spoke at the statewide Racial Identify Profiling Board's first meeting in San Diego. One of our youngest leaders passionately called for policy changes to protect our families and community.

Our Fight

San Diego's current Chief of Police will retire next year. We worked hard to ensure that the city budgeted for a national search for her replacement. Now, we're pushing for transparency and community input in the selection process, instead of a secret panel appointing our new Chief behind closed doors.
